The meaning of this mantra is: embodying suchness, through this sovereign power one removes the coverings of all defiling dusts and realizes emptiness. The emptiness within emptiness is the meaning of great emptiness. This characteristic is subtle and difficult to dispel; throughout it speaks of breaking through the ignorance-samādhi and purifying the characteristics of confusion in one's own essence; therefore it is repeated, and the two syllables raṃ raṃ are repeated once more. Furthermore, explaining the characteristics: by abiding in the syllable raṃ, one can bring great benefit to all sentient beings, bringing forth this nature and removing the defilements. If there are sentient beings who enter this mantra gateway, before long they will equal the virtues of that bodhisattva. Whenever contemplating, one takes only the single syllable of the fundamental essence as primary; when reciting, one speaks them in full. This is the seed syllable (bīja). Furthermore, whenever syllables explain one another in sequence, just as first there is the syllable a, the subsequent syllables turn to explain it. Following the syllable gateways above, that which is not all-pervasive is not called universal.
