Ta has the meaning of suchness; the dot at the side is the syllable a, signifying the practice of suchness. The syllable ra is defilement; the six defilements are the great ocean of saṃsāra. Because of contemplating this principle and nature of suchness, all defilements become identical to suchness and are originally unborn; this is the meaning of crossing the great ocean. Being able to cross this great ocean of saṃsāra means crossing over all phenomena. The repetition translates the Sanskrit word meaning 'utterly crossing over': having personally crossed over, one also universally delivers all sentient beings; hence it is called 'utterly crossing over'. If a person has not yet crossed over themselves but could deliver others, that cannot be; if they have crossed over themselves and can also deliver others, that is indeed possible. The next syllable ta is the essence of the Tathāgata: contemplating suchness and crossing the ocean of defilements, one succeeds in realizing the Tathāgata's own essence. As in the large text, there are five hundred noble Tārās, all born from the eyes of Avalokiteśvara, all being the sister-samādhis of Amitābha.
