These four syllables are the four wheels. The first syllable is the earth vajra wheel; the second syllable is the water wheel; the third syllable is the fire wheel; the fourth syllable is the wind wheel. AṂ: the intrinsic essence of this syllable is the essence of the Vajradhātu; it also has a long vowel which is practice, practice being the fire wheel, and upon it is a bindu which is the space wheel, serving as an adornment. Next, KHAṂ is the water wheel: KHA has the meaning of space; it also has a long vowel which is practice, and with the bindu it is space, namely the great emptiness. Next, the syllable AṂ is fire: in Sanskrit agni is fire. AḤ is of the nature of nirvāṇa. HA is wind. Furthermore, space has no visible form, yet it can contain and hold all forms and images. Now this syllable KHA has practice and has a bindu, which refers to all forms and images. The great emptiness, like space, also possesses the forms and images of all dharmas; this emptiness is the accomplishment of all activities. Therefore, the syllable KHAṂ can be used for water. (Inquire further.) SAṂ SAḤ (earth), HAṂ HAḤ (wind), RAṂ RAḤ (fire), VAṂ VAḤ (water): just as the syllable A above has four syllables—namely, a long vowel with a bindu above and two dots beside (visarga), and a short vowel also with a bindu above and dots beside, two syllables making four—now these [syllables] such as SA should also be known to be like this, each having four syllables. Here, only their short vowels are mentioned, combining to place the two syllables with long vowels before the short vowels, explained in accordance with the above. SAṂ SAḤ, HAṂ HAḤ (this is it; the rest follow this). Moreover, discussed generally, the syllable A is the Buddha family, the syllable SA is the Lotus family, and the syllable VA is the Vajra family; wind and fire pervade the use of the three families. (Inquire further.) Just as within the Lotus family there are naturally earth, water, fire, and wind: for calming disasters, one must use the vajra square wheel; for increasing prosperity, one must use the water wheel; for subjugation, one must use the fire wheel, applying them according to category. One should know that these five gateways of A, SA, HA, RA, and VA are identical to the five-syllable wheels above; within any single wheel there are naturally four wheels. Just as the syllable VA of the Vajra family naturally has four wheels, used respectively to perform calming disasters, increasing prosperity, and subjugation, each applied according to category. When reading other mantras, if these syllables occur according to their family categories, one immediately knows where they should be applied, each having its governing role. This passage is not yet fully clear; inquire further into it. There are also three lines of mantras:
