At that time, after the Lord of the Vajra had praised the Tathāgata with this verse, he next spoke an udāna verse to question the Buddha. "Udāna" has the meaning of "gathering together in summary"; it is called "summary" because the meaning of a single verse gathers together the immeasurable Dharma meanings of the featureless phenomena of the inexhaustible dharmadhātu. Having spoken the verse of praise, he considered that sentient beings of future ages practicing the path of mantras, having omissions regarding this mahākaruṇāgarbha-maṇḍala, would not swiftly accomplish unsurpassed saṃbodhi; therefore, in proper sequence, he asked the Buddha about the secret essential upāyas. As for "severer of all doubts," if one cannot universally sever the various nets of doubt of sentient beings, one is not called an omniscient person. Only by having personally departed from the net of doubts regarding all phenomena can one sever the nets of doubt of others. Now, since the Buddha has himself severed all nets of doubt, I now inquire and pray that you will sever doubts for us. As for "free from feverish vexations," this means eternally severing the roots of the three poisons. Now, for the sake of all sentient beings, he inquires of the Guide; because [the Buddha] can guide [sentient beings] through all phenomena to reach the Buddha's wisdom, he is called the Great Guide.
