Next, replying regarding colors and forms/classes: In broad outline there are three families: Vairocana is the Buddha family, which is the dharmadhātu body of the Tathāgata, white in color; next, Avalokiteśvara is Amitābha Buddha, whose body is yellow; next, Vajragarbha is Śākyamuni, whose body is reddish-yellow (that is, variegated in color). 'Mantras spoken by the Buddha' and 'those spoken by the buddhas': Above, 'the Buddha' refers to the mantras in the Tathāgata family of the Buddha, 'family' meaning born from the Buddha; even the spirits, as permitted by the Buddha, all belong to the Buddha family. Below, 'the buddhas' refers strictly to what is spoken by the buddhas, not extending to those of bodhisattvas and below. Both of these possess two colors, namely white and yellow. Below the families, 'mantras spoken by the buddhas' refers to those spoken by Vairocana. In sequence one should know: Vajrapāṇi is variegated, and the mantras of Avalokiteśvara are white. 'Divided according to the ritual': this merely states that one should know to blend white and yellow together, meaning neither too yellow nor too white. 'Variegated' means possessing the five colors, meaning used according to the differentiation of rituals. The Buddha family consistently uses white for calming calamities, divided according to the ritual. Avalokiteśvara is purely white, yet within that family it varies according to the ritual; its color should be white. The Lotus family is consistently used for increasing prosperity, its color being yellow. The Vajra family is consistently used for subjugation, its color being variegated. There are also three rituals distinguished within a single family, as within the Buddha family there are calming calamities, increasing prosperity, and subjugation. If calming calamities, one relies on the fundamental ritual and uses white. When performing increasing prosperity within the Buddha family, one simply relies on this ritual and uses yellow. If subjugation within the Buddha family, one simply relies on this ritual and shifts to variegated color. As with the Buddha family, one should know that the Lotus and Vajra classes can be understood similarly. 'Divided according to white rituals' means dividing the rituals according to the classes of colors. 'The mantras of Avalokiteshvara': the various voices here represent the Lotus family by which to illustrate the Buddha and Vajra families.
