Twenty-second: regarding "What is the farmer mind? It means according with the dharma of first hearing broadly and only later seeking": just as one who learns farming inquires of an old farmer: "How does one know that the land is fertile? How does one plow, sow, and weed? How does one observe the seasons? How does one reap the harvest?" Having understood them one by one in this way, one only then applies effort. This mind is also like this: first devoting oneself to consulting and receiving broad learning in the factors of the Path from the wise, and only then putting them into practice. All are brought about by past habits. Taking sharp wisdom as the antidote: for example, upon hearing that the aggregates are impermanent, one immediately knows that the elements, sense bases, dependent origination, and the like are all analogous. Furthermore, if a poisoned arrow enters the body, how could one wait for the three agricultural months to inquire broadly before pulling it out?
