At that time, Vajrapāṇi and the others endowed with great virtue (that is, the assembled multitude mentioned earlier)—when that audience heard this spoken, they [thought]: 'Regarding the teaching spoken by all the deities, having received and upheld it upon our crowns, we have obtained it.' That is, like receiving the king's command to carry it out and propagate it, they should make offerings. At that time the assembly arose again and paid homage to the Buddha, and for the sake of the long abiding of the Dharma, they requested the Buddha's adhiṣṭhāna. Asking about what the Buddha spoke, upholding it upon their crowns, they paid homage to the All-Knowing One (Sarvajña), and requested the Tathāgata's adhiṣṭhāna and protection. Why is this? The Buddha has already entrusted such a secret treasury; bearing a heavy responsibility to perform the Tathāgata's work, their duty is not light. Yet regarding this wondrous Dharma, even while the Tathāgata was in the world there was much resentment and jealousy, how much more so in the evil age of the final era! However, we have already made sincere vows, resolved to cause such a sūtra to be widely propagated. Therefore, we request the Buddha to protect us with sovereign supernatural power, so that our vows may be fulfilled. That the 'path of the Dharma-eye may long abide in the world and pervade everywhere' is the vow to propagate the sūtra. Through the Buddha's adhiṣṭhāna, they vow to make this Dharma-eye circulate in the world for a long time. This is the great path of wisdom that opens the Buddha's knowledge and vision, the road traversed by all Buddhas; hence it is called the 'path of the Dharma-eye'. May this path long abide in the world to the end of sentient beings, and horizontally pervade the world without failing to circulate. That is what Viśiṣṭacātra and others said: 'Wherever the Buddha has left traces, I vow to transmit this Dharma.' This is the intent of originally asking to propagate the sūtra.
