Regarding the sūtra saying, "From all parts of the Bhagavat's body, bodies of the Tathāgata appeared everywhere": earlier, when displaying the adornment matrix, each and every body of universal gateways pervaded the ten directions, responding to beings according to conditions. Now, wishing to speak of the complete positions of the maṇḍala, [the sūtra] in turn divides them by classes according to the upper, middle, and lower parts of the Buddha's body. From the navel downward, he manifested the physical body of Śākyamuni, demonstrating conformity with human norms, as well as the diverse forms, colors, images, and deportments of the two vehicles and the six destinies, whose voices, speech, and platforms were each distinct, and whose retinues varied successively, dwelling in the eight directions according to their proper order within the original positions of the maṇḍala. From the navel upward to the throat, there appeared countless bodhisattvas of the ten abodes, each maintaining bodies of the three mysteries, together with countless retinues, dwelling in the eight directions according to their proper order within the original positions of the maṇḍala. However, within this there are inherently two levels: from the heart downward are the great retinues [as numerous as] the fine dust motes of ten Buddha-kṣetras who maintain the myriad practices of mahākaruṇā; from the heart upward are the inner retinues [as numerous as] the fine dust motes of ten Buddha-kṣetras who maintain the secret wisdom of the vajra; they are collectively named the Assembly of the Great Mind. From the throat upward to the Tathāgata's uṣṇīṣa, there appeared the Buddha bodies of the fruition-virtues of the four wisdoms and four samādhis. These eight bodies themselves—in all world realms, their retinues, lands, titles, bodily actions, and all matters of enjoyment are completely distinct—likewise dwell in the eight directions according to their proper order within the original positions of the maṇḍala.
