The above first explains that the reason all felicitations are able to arise is entirely due to the Tathāgata's appearance in the world. Thus the Sanskrit lakṣmī is translated as 'auspicious mark', or 'endowed with the marks'; it also means 'felicitation', 'auspiciousness', 'good fortune', 'gratulation', 'majestic virtue', and 'fine appearance'. One should know that this name subsumes all merits; hence it is stated through synthesizing the meanings. The next line says 'opening', which also means 'awakening'. 'Water-born' is an alternative name for the lotus. Because it is endowed with such meanings, the Tathāgata's appearance in the world brings abundant benefits; hence it is called 'the initial wholesome felicity', or 'felicitation', or 'good fortune'—their general import is the same.
