In the meaning of the phrase above: 'tathāgata' is the Tathāgata; 'arci' is the radiant flame. Next, 'spharaṇa' is pervasive; 'avabhāsana' is all darknesses; 'gaganodārya' is boundless, equal to space. The meaning is that the Tathāgata's flame of light pervades all darknesses, equal to space without limit. This mantra takes the initial syllable TA of the phrase as its substance: like the dharmatā of the mind, it is Vairocana's great wisdom light, universally illuminating the world, leaving nowhere unreached. 'All darknesses' refers to ignorance (avidyā); because ignorance is originally unborn, its substance is light itself; therefore, the Tathāgata's radiance pervades all darknesses. 'Equal to space' means: because ignorance is boundless like space, the Tathāgata's wisdom light is also boundless like space. Up to old age and death being boundless like space, the Tathāgata's wisdom light is also boundless like space. As with the twelve links of dependent origination, so it is said of all dharmas. Because of such definitive meaning, it is called the lamp-flame mantra. Empowering lamps with this to offer to the Buddha is the foremost among all offerings.
