The sūtra says: “The transformations of earth and the rest.” This means that regarding earth, water, fire, wind, and space, each has those who cling to it as real. Some say earth is the cause of all things, because all sentient beings and all things depend on the earth to arise. Because they do not contemplate the intrinsic nature of earth, and that it exists merely from the harmony of multiple causes and conditions, they give rise to this view, thinking that those who make offerings to the earth will attain liberation. Next, there are those who impute that water can generate all things; the same applies to fire and wind. Or they impute that all things are born from space, maintaining that space is the true cause of liberation, and that one ought to make offerings to it and serve it. All should be explained at length.
