Next, the syllable Va gateway is clarified, which is the syllable va mentioned above; its essence is explained first, and then the stroke of samādhi is included. Its method of visualization is to visualize this syllable as entirely white, just like snowy mountains, cow's milk, and the like, bright and pure. First, from the navel upward, visualize an extremely white and brilliant white lotus; visualize the syllable Va of pure white color situated atop the white flower. When accomplished, one turns this syllable to form the principal deity. This is the foremost among rites of pacification (śāntika). That Buddha as the principal deity also assumes a tranquil appearance, abiding in peaceful samādhi with an extremely serene deportment. Pure white without compare, like the moonlight on an autumn night. That maṇḍala should be concentric circles, formed like a ninefold lunar disc, inside which one abides as if within a subtle white mist. When this rite is accomplished, all defilements, fevers, and the like can be quelled. Whatever corresponds with pacification is performed within this. 'Alike to cow's milk and garlands of pearls' means visualizing within this syllable a flowing stream of milk as described above, uninterrupted, pouring down into the heart like white pearls. If visualized pouring down upon oneself or another, there are no internal or external torments that will not be eliminated. Or visualize it like the moon or crystal, the light of the pure moon flowing everywhere; whatever affliction of tormenting heat there may be, all are eliminated when poured over with this. All śāntika rites correspond with white and are performed within this. The preceding syllable A was the vajra maṇḍala; this syllable Va is named the water maṇḍala.
