The sūtra says: "Further taking this as a cause, on the six fast days, one gives to parents, sons, daughters, and relatives. This is the second: the sprout seed." These six fast days are those of which the *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa* says: "Ancient rṣis of the five superknowledges exhorted people to abstain from food on these days. It both accords with wholesome dharmas and avoids calamities from ghosts and spirits," as explained there at length. Seeing that ceasing craving brings inner benefit and joy, and wishing to practice this dharma to make it grow, on the fast day they give away their own wealth and possessions to their six relations, thinking to themselves: "I am free from the worry of guarding it, while causing others to love and respect me, and I obtain a reputation for filial piety and righteousness." Seeing this cause and effect, their joy increases further. Because of joy, their wholesome mind slightly increases, just as a sprout grows from a seed.
