“Vajrapāṇi, what is that mind of greed? It means following defiled phenomena.” This means being defiled and attached to the objective realm before one, which is defiling the pure mind. If one follows and cultivates this phenomenon, it is called having a mind of greed. Because mental phenomena are subtle and difficult to discern, one merely observes the activities performed by them, which must have characteristics manifested externally. For example, by observing the appearance of smoke, the nature of fire can be known by inference. Therefore, most of the phrases clarify the meaning through following and cultivating, as can be analogously understood. All these are minds that arise mixed with various goods before one attains the supramundane mind; if the practitioner skillfully discerns the true from the false, just as a farmer strives to eliminate weeds to support the fine sprouts, the power of the pure mind will gradually increase. Do not regard them merely as matters of cause and condition and disregard these ultimate words, causing the mind to sink into them without self-awareness.
