The sūtra says: “Spontaneity.” This refers to a class of non-Buddhists who impute that all dharmas exist spontaneously and have no creator. Just as when a lotus is born, its color is fresh and pure—who dyed it? The sharp tip of a thorn—who carved it? Thus they know that all dharmas are naturally so. A master refuted this, saying: “Now, seeing with our eyes people in the world building boats, houses, and the like, all exist from multiple conditions and are not formed spontaneously; how can they be naturally so? If one says that although they exist, they are not yet evident, and therefore require human effort to bring them forth, this too is not correct. Since they require human effort to bring them forth, they depend on conditions and do not exist spontaneously.”
