Twelfth: regarding "What is the combative mind? It has as its nature mutual disputation of right and wrong": this means that upon hearing the spoken teachings of others, one always loves to debate right and wrong, saying, "This meaning should be so; that matter is not so." Even if what was said accords with reason, one uses various means to spy out its strengths and weaknesses, desiring to make them fall into error. Even if others come to ask a question, one also seeks out its flaws, saying, "This question is perverse; I should not answer it." When such marks appear, one should know that it is the combative mind.
