Twenty-first: regarding "What is the merchant mind? It means according with and cultivating the dharma of first gathering and later distributing": like merchants in the world who first devote themselves to accumulating goods and then reflect on and distribute them, saying, "This item should be used in such a place, and that item should be used in that place, to gain great profit." If a practitioner first devotes themselves to internal and external studies so that they are fully prepared, and only then deliberates: "These are worldly scriptures, to be used in such a place; these are teachings of the two vehicles, to receive such a person; these are provisions of the Mahāyāna, required for such a condition"—this is called the merchant mind. It is also brought about by previous habits. Cultivating swift wisdom is its antidote. That is to say, as soon as one hears any dharma, one should immediately contemplate its causes, conditions, and practical application; why wait until one has accumulated extensive learning before seeking places to apply it?
