The fortieth: "What is the thorn mind? It is having an unwholesome deed as its nature in all situations." Just as a thorn thicket causes much harm and obstruction everywhere, unsettling anyone who draws near; this mind is also like this: if it performs a wholesome deed such as great generosity, upon finishing it immediately generates regret. If it finishes doing an unwholesome deed, upon reflecting it also harbors shame and fear. For this reason, it constantly harbors remorse over unwholesome deeds, restless with turbulent thoughts. The antidote here is: if there is an infraction, apply oneself swiftly to confess and eliminate it, without generating agitation and remorse. For wholesome deeds done, one should reflect upon them and generate joy.
