This refers to when the Bodhisattva first renounced household life. The Sanskrit merely says 'eradicating various sufferings', which implicitly contains the meaning of 'household life'—that is, casting off the sufferings of the bonds of various affections of the household life. As for 'place of austerities', the correct translation of the Sanskrit should be 'place for cultivating the body'. When the Bodhisattva initially leapt over the city walls to go toward the place for cultivating the body, all worlds experienced boundless, limitless auspicious events, as also explained at length in the *Avataṃsaka* and elsewhere. At that time, the heavenly hosts of the Śuddhāvāsa [heavens] down to the guardians of the world all rejoiced greatly, knowing that the fully enlightened *uḍumbara* flower would soon blossom; all bowed their heads in homage and circumambulated him, or personally held the horse's hooves to see him off. You now, also within the secret womb, have first parted from your parents of ignorance and proceeded toward the place for cultivating the body along the path of the initial Dharma light. You should know that the Śuddhāvāsa devas and others also rejoice and pay homage, knowing that before long you will be equal to the Bhagavat; hence it says, 'you obtain a celebration like that'.
