"Hearing much and practicing concentration, cultivating both śamatha and vipaśyanā: if one only biasedly pursues one, how could one perfect the power of the path? Thus the *Nirvāṇa [Sūtra]* says: 'First shake it with concentration, and later uproot it with wisdom.' Concentration is like binding a thief; wisdom is like killing a thief. Exercising both concentration and wisdom, eyes and feet assist each other, and arriving at the cool pool, one is guaranteed to be without hindrance. The Buddha and Ānanda, in the time of the Buddha King of Emptiness, brought forth the great resolve together; yet because [Ānanda] delighted in hearing much, he did not diligently cultivate practice. 'The Buddha has now attained the path, while I have only just entered the stream, and still encountering evil conditions, I was unable to escape.' This truly stemmed from biased deficiency; how lamentable indeed! Thus the text below states: 'Though you have heard all the secret gates of dust-mote Buddhas, if outflows of desire are not first eliminated, storing up learning will become an error.'
