The Tathāgata's major marks are thirty-two, from the flat soles of the feet to the fleshy uṣṇīṣa at the crown. The minor marks are of eighty kinds, from the invisible crown down to the virtuous marks on hands and feet. Because they flow forth from the ocean of major marks, they are called 'minor marks' (anuvyañjana). Śakra, Brahmā, and wheel-turning kings also possess the major marks, yet they lack these minor marks; being dim and unclear, they cannot be called exquisitely supreme and extraordinary. His physical form and substance are pure and undefiled, like lapis lazuli.
