This directly states the substance of delusion. 'Eyes' refers to the eye faculty; 'mind' refers to the mental consciousness. The faculties and consciousnesses are unreal, like flowers in space; if one grasps them as having a substantial essence that can see and can delight, not only is one deluded regarding the emptiness of dharmas, but one also gives rise to the affection and views of self and others. Therefore, a later passage states: 'The six serve as matches for thieves, robbing one's own family treasures. The beginningless unreal conditioning and the avidyā of entrenchment are entirely due to the faculties and consciousnesses, and nothing else. Conceptualized characteristics become dust; conscious feelings become defilement. Transmigration through birth and death is entirely caused by this.' Therefore, the inquiry and examination follow below to make him realize their unreality.
