The mind and eyes are the root; the dusts and toils are the branches. If one is deluded about the basis of the root, the manifold branches will be difficult to eliminate. Because they defile, they are called 'dusts'; because they disturb and afflict, they are called 'toils'—this refers generally to the two obscurations.
