Ordinary people and non-Buddhists have the four inversions of permanence and so forth; śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas have the four of impermanence and so forth; hence he says "various." Beginningless avidyā perfumes and becomes seeds; seeds must produce fruits, generating offspring upon offspring, continuous in perfuming, like beads strung on a thread connected in succession, called a "cluster of akṣa fruits." *Akṣa* is Sanskrit, here meaning "beads strung on a thread." A sūtra says: "All dharmas are in the repository of consciousness, and the repository is likewise in dharmas; they mutually act as the nature of fruit, and also constantly act as the nature of cause." Master Ying says: "Akṣa is the name of a tree; its fruit is shaped like a gallnut, and in that country they often gather them together to sell, like apricot kernels in this land, so it is used as a metaphor—metaphorizing afflictions, karma, and suffering."
