When the five objects are not present and clear awareness does not operate, having cut off external conditions, it is said: 'internally guard quietude.' At that very time discrimination is not absent; if one directly takes this internal discriminating mind to be the complete nature, this too is unreasonable. One does not know that this entirely arises from the shadow-objective-state of the sixth dust of dharmas and is also not the complete nature; it is merely the mental consciousness in a solitary, scattered state, separately conditioning by inference and grasping solitary shadow objects, not being clear awareness grasping together with the five [consciousnesses]. Hence it says: 'even if you extinguish seeing, hearing, sensing, and knowing.'
