"When he first heard the Buddha rebuke this as not being his mind, he was astonished, grew doubtful, and raised difficulties, thinking that there would be no mind at all. When it came to revealing that the pure, wondrously bright nature of all minds is originally all-pervading and perfect, serving as the equal substance and nature of all worlds, causes, effects, and fine dusts, although the Buddha had given this instruction, he still feared that long-held clinging was firm. Therefore, taking up the conditioning dust once again, he re-examined false thought, showing that lacking a substance apart from dust, how could it be the original reality? If one stubbornly clings to it without dissolving it, the Dharmakāya would be annihilated, and the cultivation and realization of the forbearance of dharmas would surely have nothing on which to rely. Although Ānanda had not yet awakened to the real, he nevertheless knew that clinging to the false was an error; hence it says: 'fell silent, having lost themselves.'"
