窮子捨父，喻也。絕無功德法財以養法身慧命，故云窮子。不識本真，背清淨覺，故云捨父。輪轉五道，往而不返，故云逃逝。因佛指示，方知過誤，故云今日乃知。

"The impoverished son abandoning his father is an analogy. Utterly lacking the wealth of merit and Dharma to nourish the Dharmakāya and the life of wisdom, he is called an 'impoverished son.' Failing to recognize his original reality and turning his back on pure enlightenment, he is said to 'abandon his father.' Revolving through the five destinies, going on without returning, he is said to 'flee.' Because of the Buddha's pointing out, he only now realizes his fault and error; hence it says: 'Only today have I realized.'"
