1.57

戒可遵依也。毘尼云律，律法也。斷割重輕、開遮持犯，非法不定。弘，大也。範，法也。既嚴持清禁，身心弗違，大能軌則世間，真是法中綱紀也。

Their precepts can be complied with and relied upon. "Vinaya" is called discipline (lü 律); discipline is law. Severing the grave and the light, prescribing open allowance and prohibition, upholding and transgression—without law it is not determined. "Broadly" means great. "Model" means standard. Having strictly maintained the pure prohibitions without their body or mind transgressing, they are greatly able to standardise the world, truly being the guiding framework within the Dharma.
