Ānanda had already heard that the guest-dust stirs and moves, while empty space and the host are ever naturally tranquil. Now encountering this question, by analogy he knew that the nature of seeing is free of movement and stillness. If movement and stillness are contrasted with each other, then the Buddha's hand is moving and the nature of seeing is still. But if clarified solely in terms of the substance of seeing, fundamentally it has never moved, nor is there now any stillness. This answer somewhat accords with the real, hence the Buddha approved it, saying, "So it is."
