Translated here as "Near-Few," and rendered according to its meaning as "Nature of Dust," because he attained the Way through contemplating that the nature of dust is empty. A fine speck of dust is a minute fraction close to form; bordering upon empty space, it is the boundary of form; hence the nature of dust is named "Near-Few." As the sūtra says below: "I awakened to the nature of form; proceeding from impure white bones and specks of dust returning to empty space, emptiness and form both being absent, I achieved the path of the adept (aśaikṣa-mārga), and the Tathāgata sealed me with the name Niṣad." There were also other people not fully recorded in the sūtra, hence it says "and others." That is, those such as the three Kāśyapa brothers; these were all pre-eminent figures, serving as spiritual teachers to the assembly, guiding the Buddhadharma, each possessing disciples; hence it says "leaders."
