Fully called bodhisattva, translated here as "enlightened sentient being." There are three explanations: 1. Bodhi is the fruit sought, sattva refers to the beings saved; 2. Bodhi is the fruit sought, sattva is the person able to seek; 3. Bodhi is the awakening wisdom, sattva is the thinking and conscious mind. Generally speaking, the name is established in terms of compassion and wisdom, subject and object, real and illusory. These persons spent the retreat not in just one place, hence it says "the ten directions." Their practice within the restricted period could not be completely thorough; receiving direct instruction from the master, only with the summer retreat completed did they accomplish it; hence it says "consulted to resolve their doubts of mind." Reverently obeying and receiving, it is called "respectfully obeying." Because his loving thoughts were majestic and weighty, he is called "compassionate majesty." "About to seek the secret meaning" means their intention was to request the expounding of the Dharma gate of the Tathāgata's secret cause and the definitive meaning of practice and realization.
