The nature of a fox is full of suspicion; wherever it encounters ice, it listens for the absence of the sound of water before it walks. Formerly hearing of annihilation after death, and now hearing of non-ceasing and non-arising, he hesitates and cannot decide which is right and which is wrong, hence it is called "fox-like doubts". King Prasenajit deeply understood what Ānanda harboured, knowing that he sought non-arising and non-ceasing apart from arising and ceasing; although his mind made a secret request, his mouth did not express it in words. Therefore, he cited non-Buddhist doctrines hoping for the Buddha's instruction—closely refuting the non-Buddhists' annihilationist view to let them know of continuous rebirth after death, and deeply leading Ānanda to awaken to reality as not separate from the false consciousness of arising and ceasing; hence he says: "verify and know this mind's stage of non-arising and non-ceasing."
