向下更約用有優劣，體無差異。用約人辨，體對物論。斯則前後三義以辨真也：一顯無生滅，二明有勝用，三示無差別。故此答釋，分為二科：一、約用優劣以略明。

Below, it will further be explained by reference to function having superior and inferior qualities, while the essence has no distinction. Function is distinguished in terms of persons, while essence is discussed in relation to things. These, then, are three meanings from beginning to end for distinguishing the true: first, revealing the absence of arising and ceasing; second, clarifying that there is superior function; third, demonstrating the absence of distinction. Therefore this reply is divided into two sections: first, briefly clarifying in terms of the superiority and inferiority of function.
