Aniruddha is translated here as 'as-one-wishes' (Ruyi) or 'unimpoverished' (Wupin). In the past, he gave food to a pratyekabuddha, and for ninety-one kalpas he enjoyed pleasures according to his wishes among devas and humans, lacking nothing. Before entering the Way, his disposition was to sleep much, for which he was scolded by the Buddha; because of this, he did not sleep, and consequently lost his sight. The Buddha taught him to cultivate the divine eye to see worldly affairs; because he cultivated it, he saw the trichiliocosm as though viewing a fruit in his palm. As explained in the *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa*, great arhats see a small chiliocosm, great pratyekas see a hundred Buddha-realms, and all Buddhas see all Buddha-lands. That Aniruddha alone sees a great chiliocosm is because he repeatedly cultivated mental engagement; among the śrāvakas, he is foremost in the divine eye. Here, mentioning 'Jambudvīpa' is because every great chiliocosm contains Jambudvīpa; revealing the whole by means of a part is not contradictory.
