大眾茫然不知所措，雖聞安慰令諦思惟，智慧不明，罔解所問。文殊智德旁為發機，先敘不悟，後方請示。言二種者，謂於色空之上辨於精見是與非是之二義也。

The great assembly was bewildered and did not know what to do. Although they heard the words of comfort instructing them to contemplate carefully, their wisdom was not clear and they had no understanding of what was being investigated. Mañjuśrī's virtue of wisdom intervened on their behalf to open up the occasion: first he related their failure to understand, and afterwards he requested instruction. In speaking of "the two kinds," it means distinguishing upon form and space the two meanings of whether quintessential seeing is or is not [them].
