This points generally to all appearances. Although the preceding text revealed, relying on the single gateway of the eye, that the substance of true seeing is separate from conditions and transcends appearances, neither arising nor ceasing, and briefly harmonized that seeing and conditions are fundamentally the wondrous, pure, bright substance of bodhi, it did not yet make clear that all dharmas of the three categories are like illusions and transformations. Hence it points them out here. Being false and unreal, defiling the true nature, they are called 'floating dust.' Being reliant on falsehood and deceptively designated with sentimental names, they are called 'illusory.' Non-existent yet suddenly appearing, completely lacking substance, they are called 'transformed.'
