Erecting the hand is inverted, yet he considers it upright; because it does not follow the natural position of the body, this is inverted. Ānanda does not distinguish the true from the false, clinging to the false and losing the true; hence the Tathāgata reproaches him for acting in an inverted manner. Having realized that the false fundamentally has no essence, one should know that the true is inherently quiescent; hence he acknowledged that the seeing confronting the head's movement and the nature observing the river are themselves the true nature, with no separate true. Ānanda, failing to understand as before, thought there was a true outside the false, and so was unwilling to accept that I am an inverted person while the king has the nature of non-arising. Since Ānanda presented a contentious question, the Tathāgata tested him in terms of concrete facts; failing to distinguish contrary and accordant conditions, it is difficult to escape the inverted disposition. The text below immediately refutes it.
