瞪，直視貌。瞢，昏悶不了也。聞徵倒處瞢然不了，既不措其一辭，但知向佛直視。
"Stared blankly" (瞪): the appearance of looking straight ahead. "Bewildered" (瞢): dim, muddled, and failing to understand. Hearing the interrogation regarding where inversion lies, they were bewildered and failed to understand; unable to utter a single word, they only knew to stare straight at the Buddha.
