"If the substance of consciousness is one, and its substance must be produced from taste, then salty, bland, sweet, and pungent, combined and co-arising with their various mutating characteristics, being identical as one taste, should admit of no discrimination. Since discrimination would be absent, it would not be named consciousness; how could it still be named the tongue-and-taste-consciousness element?
