This directly refutes consciousness arising from space. 'Neither appearance nor seeing' is why it says 'these two negations', which directly indicates space. 'Identical to nothingness' means it is ultimately non-existent, like the hair of a tortoise or the horns of a hare. If one says that space has an existent substance, how could it be like material images that can have shape and appearance? Furthermore, this space is dull and without discernment; if discernment-lacking space were to produce something, it should also lack discernment; hence it says: 'what would it discriminate?'
