The first two lines draw the analogy to refute the remaining consciousnesses. 'Hearing and listening' refer to ear and nose; 'sensing and knowing' refer to tongue, body, and mental consciousness. The two lines from 'should not' down conclude that there is no place of arising; the arising conditions of consciousness are thus called 'conditions of consciousness'.
