The essence of hearing is simply false awareness. Since movement and stillness strike and arouse each other, stimulating the true into the false and losing the true still nature, it consequently generates the essence of hearing, coiling the shadow of that sound and knotting the shadow to form a faculty. Because the nature of sound is empty and diffuse, it must be coiled and gathered to accomplish the function of hearing; having coiled to form a faculty, it further resembles curled leaves.
