Aniruddha is translated as "Without Extinction." He was the son of [King] Śuklodana. Because he slept excessively, the Tathāgata rebuked him. From then on he was vigorous and did not sleep for seven days, thereby losing both eyes. The Buddha instructed him to cultivate the divine eye, binding his mindfulness to the condition. The subtle, pure matter of the four great elements arose in half of his head, so that he could see through obstructions, internally and externally, gazing upon both brightness and darkness, illuminating the three-thousandfold world system as though viewing a fruit in the palm of his hand. Therefore it says "he sees without eyes."
