Upananda is translated as "Worthy Joy." Together with the dragon Nanda, he constantly protected the realm of Magadha, providing seasonal rain so that the country suffered no years of famine. King Bimbisāra held a great assembly each year to repay the dragons' kindness, and all the people rejoiced; from this he received his name. Nanda is translated as "Joy," who was subdued by Maudgalyāyana. As for hearing without ears, the specific origin is not detailed.
