Properly called Gavāmpati, translated here as "Bovine Appearance." A sūtra states: "I have karma of speech: in past lives I slighted and mocked a śramaṇa, and life after life I have had the disease of bovine rumination." Rumination refers to how cattle, after eating, constantly engage in empty chewing; people of the time referred to it as "cattle chewing." Regarding the abnormal tongue, no other specific circumstance has been seen; or perhaps since it says "bovine appearance," it is indeed a cow's tongue. Yet he is able to discern the tastes of what humans eat; hence it says "tastes flavors with an abnormal tongue."
