即時，如來勅羅睺羅擊鍾一聲，問阿難言：「汝今聞不？」阿難、大眾俱言：「我聞。」鍾歇無聲，佛又問言：「汝今聞不？」阿難、大眾俱言：「不聞。」時羅睺羅又擊一聲，佛又問言：「汝今聞不？」阿難、大眾又言：「俱聞。」

At that moment, the Tathāgata instructed Rāhula to strike a bell once, and asked Ānanda: "Do you hear it now?" Ānanda and the great assembly all said: "I hear it." The bell stopped and there was no sound. The Buddha asked again: "Do you hear it now?" Ānanda and the great assembly all said: "We do not hear it." Then Rāhula struck it once again, and the Buddha asked again: "Do you hear it now?" Ānanda and the great assembly said again: "We all hear it."
