"Like a person in heavy sleep lying fast asleep on a bed and pillow, while someone in their household is pounding cloth or pounding rice during their sleep. That person in a dream hears the sound of pounding and pestling, and takes it for something else, either as the beating of a drum or the striking of a bell; then while dreaming, they wonder to themselves that the bell sounds like wood and stone. At that moment, they suddenly awaken, immediately recognize the sound of the pestle, and tell their family members: 'Just when I was dreaming, I was confused by this pounding sound and took it to be the resonance of a drum.' Ānanda, in a dream, does this person remember stillness and disturbance, opening and closing, obstruction and penetration? Although their physical form is asleep, the nature of hearing is not dimmed."
