'Opportune' means the right time, and 'meeting' means encountering. Meeting the Buddha in an opportune time, and from this attaining the Way, initial awakening unites with original awakening as if one had never been deluded; hence it says 'original awakening'. Awakening means realization. Since one was never deluded, there is only the one awakening; how could there still be the difference of seeing and hearing? Thus he says: 'there would be no difference from not having heard them'—here briefly citing the ear faculty among the six. Ānanda's request is aimed at this faculty; he subtly discloses his capacity, seeking the Buddha's revelation. The Tathāgata, knowing the subtle sign, orders the assembly to each speak of their gates of awakening; Avalokiteśvara and Mañjuśrī respond to the capacity by narrating and selecting. Resonance and response aid each other, skillfully completing the course of conversion; since we receive the benefit today, how could we forget the root?
