Bhaiṣajyarāja and Bhaiṣajyasamudgata, through tasting many flavours, understood that taste has no arising, is neither identical to body and mind nor separate from body and mind. Through the illumination of awareness of taste, they ascended to the rank of bodhisattva. Here it is said: the nature of taste is fundamentally nonexistent, awaiting the faculty before it is perceived; with no faculty, there is no taste; therefore it is not perfect penetration. 'When tasting' means the time of savouring.
