As mentioned earlier, when in deep sleep mental thoughts do not operate, and upon hearing the sound of pounding mortars one mistakes it for something else, at that time does one recall stillness or movement? One should know that the nature of hearing is uninterrupted; hence it is said: 'It is not absent because one is not thinking.' 'Vitarka and vicāra transcend discursive thought' means that since this [nature of hearing] is not associated with mental thoughts, it transcends the sphere of vitarka, vicāra, and discursive thought. Because the translator did not fully rearrange the syntax, the phrasing became inverted. Vitarka and vicāra (jueguan) are vitarka (xun) and vicāra (si). Discursive thought is the omnipresent mental factor of volition (cetanā). All are mental factors that are not associated with it, hence it is said to 'transcend' them. Alternatively, 'jue' is original enlightenment (benjue), which is the nature of hearing; 'guan' is illumination. Read this way, the text flows smoothly.
